Product basics
What is GetReadVault?
GetReadVault is a browser extension for highlighting webpage text, adding notes and tags, and reviewing those excerpts in a sidebar library. It focuses on capture while you read—not on becoming another knowledge base.
Who is it for?
People who read a lot in the browser: students, researchers, developers, writers, and anyone who bookmarks pages and then cannot find the paragraph that mattered.
How is it different from browser bookmarks?
Bookmarks save links. GetReadVault saves the passage itself, with optional notes and tags, so you can return to the exact excerpt.
How is it different from Notion, Obsidian, or Readwise?
Those tools are destinations for knowledge. GetReadVault is the input step at the reading site. You highlight without switching apps. The extension can download a local Markdown or JSON file of this browser's highlights. Direct sync to Notion, Obsidian, or Readwise is not available.
Using the product
How do I save my first highlight?
Install the extension, open any webpage, select text, then use the highlight button or the context menu.
Can I add notes and tags?
Yes. After saving a highlight you can add notes, comments, and tags. You can also save one level of nested excerpts inside an existing highlight.
What does the sidebar do?
On Chrome and Edge the sidebar has Overview, Page, Library, and Tags. Firefox uses a popup library (Firefox 140+). You can review local highlights without signing in.
Will highlights always appear on the original webpage?
GetReadVault tries to restore highlights from saved location and text. If the page changes a lot, uses a strict CSP, or blocks extensions, some marks may not restore perfectly.
Does it support PDFs, YouTube, or local files?
No. The current product is webpage text. PDF, subtitles, and local files are not supported.
Local storage and cloud sync
Can I use GetReadVault without signing in?
Yes. Local highlights, notes, tags, and the in-extension library work without an account.
Where is my data stored?
Unsigned-in data stays in your browser (IndexedDB). If you sign in with Pro, content you actively save can sync to GetReadVault Cloud.
Can I see highlights on another computer?
Only with Pro cloud sync. Local-only captures stay on that browser profile.
Will uninstalling the extension delete my data?
Uninstalling or clearing site data can delete local highlights. Pro cloud sync is the backup path for content you chose to sync.
Privacy and permissions
Why does the extension need access to all websites?
Highlighting on arbitrary pages requires a content script. GetReadVault only saves text you actively capture. It does not upload the full page body.
Does GetReadVault sell my data?
No.
What is co-reading?
A Pro host can open a private room on one webpage and invite others to highlight that article together. Guests do not need Pro. This is not a Team plan and is not a public annotation layer like Hypothesis.
Subscription
Is GetReadVault free?
Yes. Local capture and in-extension review stay free.
What does Pro include?
Cross-device and cross-browser cloud sync for the highlights, notes, and tags you save. A Pro host can also start optional co-reading rooms on a page; guests do not need Pro. Local Markdown/JSON export is free in the extension and is this device only. AI summaries, a full cloud archive, and Team are not current Pro benefits.
How do I cancel?
Cancel from the account portal or the payment provider. Paid benefits remain until the current period ends. Local features stay free.
Browsers
Which browsers are supported?
Chrome, Microsoft Edge, and Firefox are listed in their stores. Safari is coming soon.
Are mobile browsers supported?
Not as a primary product. GetReadVault is a desktop extension.
Troubleshooting
Why can't I highlight on some pages?
Chrome Web Store pages, some iframes, strict CSP sites, and PDF viewers often block extensions.
How do I report a problem?
Email support@getreadvault.com with browser version, extension version, the page URL, and steps to reproduce.
Export
Can I export my highlights?
Yes. In the extension library or the storage banner, download every highlight stored in this browser as Markdown or JSON. This is free for signed-out, Free, and Pro users. It is this device only: it does not pull a full cloud archive, and import, PDF, CSV, and Notion/Obsidian pipes are not available.
